Why Do We Engage in Mission?
Mission is hard work. When I talk about mission I'm thinking of the task of proclaiming the gospel both here at home and overseas. It's hard work. There are plenty of discouragements, opposition and reasons to not do it.
Novelist Philip Roth once said "In every calm and reasonable person there is a hidden second person scared witless about death." … Studies revealed that when people consciously think about death, they just want to get it out of their minds, largely by convincing themselves, as … Steve Chaplin puts it, "Not me, not now." They say, "I'm young, I'm healthy, I'm going to start eating right." But when death is on the fringes of consciousness, threatening to pop up, we keep it at bay by leaning on the defenses we learned as children. We try to comfort ourselves: "I'm good, so I'm protected; I'm special, I'm part of something great; I last, I'm above the fray, an eternal soul, not a mere material thing."
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
Did Peter Piper pick a peck of pickled peppers?
If Peter Piper Picked a peck of pickled peppers,
Where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?
tongue twisters drive us crazy
Getting our mouths around the words together
Our tongues are often where we find ourselves in the most strife
In how we come at each other as well
Whatever we might think in our minds
once we've said it out loud we can't erase the words we've said
The Corinthian Christians had a problem with their tongues, it was twisting them up
Love is patient love is kind
How many times you heard those words
Last time my guess would have been at a wedding
Inspiring word of love, we lift our heads up at the mention of love
We're always surprised when we're met with love
Where are you noticing your heart run to
At the mention of love
How often do we hear love as the reason to justify the craziest of things
So what's love doing here in Paul's letter to the Corinthians
I get the feeling he wasn't thinking about a wedding talk
Does life feel like we're dealt a hand of cards by God
Some cards feel like great moments
some are filled with crisis.
With the cards you've been dealt, how do you respond?
Ever had the experience of things we read in the Bible
And it feels like someone just scraped their fingernails
Down the black board
Promise I won't do it
I reckon this passage gets our attention like that
So we've heard this passage read to us
are you left scratching your head
What do we now do with that?
