WHAT GETS OUR ATTENTION ?
SIRENS--- CAR HORNS---THE BABY CRYING---- THE SMELL OF
SMOKE--- THE RED LIGHT ON THE CAR DASH
ANYTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY
There are so many things in life today that are out to get our attention. The wailing sirens of police cars and ambulances, the blaring of car horns in the city. Has anybody been to New York? The noise is unbelievable!
A baby’s cry demands our attention, we immediately know the difference between a cry of distress and just wanting attention.
The smell of smoke where it shouldn't be causes some people to go into panic mode, especially around the house.
The sudden sight of a red light on a car dash gets our attention straight away, or at least it should!
Not as much though as a red and blue light flashing in our rear view mirror!
There is advertising on TV, in the papers and magazines, flashing signs outside shops, all there to get our attention.
But what really gets or attention is something totally unexpected, something totally out of the ordinary.
That's just how it was with Moses
WHAT GOT MOSES' ATTENTION ?
EXTRORDINARY BURNING BUSH --- GODS VOICE
Moses was just a farmer like me. He was looking after his sheep, minding his own business, when he saw something very unusual and out of the ordinary. The extraordinary sight of a bush burning all by itself but not burning up.
Then the amazing voice of God talking to him.
God really got Moses’ attention
WHY WAS THIS ?
God had chosen Moses to save His people –the Hebrews from slavery and oppression in Egypt.
What was so special about Moses? Lets have a look
MOSES GODS MAN
GODS BABY---MOSES' STORY----JESUS
Even though Moses was working as a shepherd for his father-in-law Reuel, Moses had been selected by God for a special purpose many years earlier. A rescue mission to save Gods people.
He had escaped being killed as a baby, rescued from the river Nile by Pharaoh's daughter and was brought up in the palace. He was educated , well known and respected.
Because he got into a fight as a young man and killed an Egyptian, Pharaoh tried to kill him. He had to escape Egypt and go to Midian.
Almost 1300 years later God sent another baby, Jesus on a rescue mission. To save Gods people again ---us.
This time it was Gods own son. He too escaped death as a baby.
THE PRESCENCE OF THE LORD IS HOLY
HOLY GROUND---TAKE OFF YOUR SANDLES
BEHAVE APPROPRIATLEY---DONT COME ANY CLOSER
MOSES IS IN AWE OF GODS PRESENCE---COVERS HIS EYES
God makes it very clear to Moses that he is in Gods presence and is standing on Holy Ground.
He must take off his sandals.
Moses is so terrified that he covers his eyes.
God was telling Moses to behave appropriately in His presence.
PERHAPS OUR ATTITUDE TO GOD IS A BIT TOO CASUAL
What attitude do we have in the presence of God?
Is our church “Holy Ground”?
Perhaps our attitude to God is a bit too casual, do we give Him the reverence He demands?
GOD GIVES MOSES HIS CREDENTIALS
BUSINESS CARD--- THE GOD OF YOUR ANCESTORS
God introduces himself to Moses. In effect giving Moses His business card.
Ex 3:6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
How do we begin to understand the power and magnificence of God?
LETS GO BACK TO JOB
GOD TELLS JOB IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS ABOUT HIS
AWESOME MAJESTY---THE GREAT CREATOR
Job 38:1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm. He said:
Job 38:2 “Who is this that darkens my counsel
with words without knowledge?
Job 38:3 Brace yourself like a man;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.
Job 38:4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
Tell me, if you understand.
GENESIS TELLS US THE SAME STORY
Ge 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
GOD GIVES MOSES HIS COMMISSION
MOSES WAS ANORDINARY BLOKE (GODS MAN) SENT OUT ON A MASSIVE MISSION
WE'RE JUST ORDINARY BLOKES TOO ----GODS PEOPLE
PERHAPS GOD NEEDS SOMETHING SPECIAL FROM US AS WELL
There was nothing special about Moses, he was just an ordinary bloke living an ordinary life dealing with the issues that life dealt out to him.
Sure he had an amazing childhood but then he became a drifter when he had to escape Egypt. “An alien in a foreign land” as he put it.
At that point in his life he had no idea that God had chosen him for a very special purpose.
To be Gods instrument in rescuing the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.
Look around you and you will see a room full of ordinary people, just like Moses.
Waiting to be used by God for some very special purpose.
What is God preparing us for?
How will god get our attention?
GOD IS PLANNING A HUGE ADVENTURE FOR HIS PEOPLE
GODS OWN CHILDREN IN THEIR VERY OWN COUNTRY
THE LAND OF CANAAN
A LAND FLOWING WITH MILK AND HONEY
WILL THE PEOPLE BELIEVE MOSES?
Imagine for a minute how Moses must have felt when God told him of his plan to rescue His people out of Egypt and lead them to the amazing, beautiful and productive land of Canaan.
Ex 3:7 The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.
Ex 3:8 So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.
Ex 3:9 And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them.
Ex 3:10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”
Ex 3:11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” 6
Ex 3:12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
Ex 3:13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
Ex 3:14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
GOD TELLS MOSES HIS NAME---I AM
CONFUSING FOR ME ------BUT
JESUS SAID IT TOO IN JOHN 8
Jn 8:58 “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
WAS JESUS THERE AT THE CREATION TOO?
LETS GO BACK TO THE BEGINNING OF JOHNS GOSPEL
Jn 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Jn 1:2 He was with God in the beginning.
Jn 1:3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
Jn 1:4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
Jn 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
JESUS WAS THERE TOO------WITH GOD-----WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
THE HOLY TRINITY IN ACTION---RIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING
Ex 20:1 And God spoke all these words: -THE FIRST COMMANDMENT
Ex 20:2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
Ex 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before me.
IN ALL THESE EVENTS GOD IS SAYING I AM THE ONLY ONE
THE MIGHTY CREATOR AND MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE
HE COMMANDED MOSES---AND THE ISRAELITES
HE PUT JOB IN HIS PLACE
DOES HE HAVE THE SAME IMPACT AND AUTHAURITY TODAY?
MABE WE'VE LOST SIGHT OF THE AWESOMENESS OF GOD
THE AWESOMENESS OF JESUS
HAS JESUS GOT OUR ATTENTION?
EASTER-- DEATH--- RESSURECTION-- THE EMPTY TOMB
God wanted to rescue us so much that He sent His son on that enormous rescue mission.
Jesus taught us how to live in harmony with each other.
Jesus taught us about the kingdom of heaven and how we can be a part of it through Him.
That trusting in Him and turning from sin we may inherit eternal life
For us he took the punishment for our sin by dying on a cruel Roman cross
He demonstrated that He had overcome death by His resurrection
He promised that we too will overcome death
As the apostle John said in his gospel:-
Jn 3:14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,
Jn 3:15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.
Jn 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Jn 3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
Jn 3:18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe
stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one
and only Son.
