The Light Overcomes the Darkness!
The winds obey Him – and now the demons! Mark recounts all the
incidents that built up Peter’s confession in Chapter 8 “You are the
Christ!” Peter was a person who had to struggle towards faith in Jesus
Christ as the Son of God over a period of time. Each incident Peter
witnessed was a hammer blow to his unbelief. Peter found faith hard to
come by! We see what convinced Peter – not just one incident or two, but
a whole flood reaching its crescendo in the feeding of the 4,000 and then
Decapolis: Damascus, Philadelphia (modern Amman), Canatha,
Sythopolis (Beth Shean), Gadara, Pella, Gerasa, Hippos, Dion, Raphana.
Hellenistic cities founded by Alexander the Great’s soldiers. Centres of
Hellenism. A Gentile area.
This terrible reality of the demonic is not the whole reality – there is far
more. Evil is real, but it is not eternal! There is Someone rather than
something greater than evil. This Gospel impels you along the path that
led Peter to faith! May Peter’s journey to faith encourage, bless and
confirm your faith.

●Different strokes for different folks!
●The people beg Jesus to leave! It would appear on first instance
that the demons won! Christ is rejected by these people, people he
had come to see.
●There is no occult power that can hurt God’s people – poison will
kill us, but no supernatural power can hurt us – without God’s

The Devil’s Strategic Purpose
●The people plead with Jesus to leave their territory.
●The Devil is willing to lose battles to win the war.
●To keep you from a living faith in Jesus Christ – think in terms of
Jesus’ parable of the soils – we have an enemy! How does he
attack our faith?
●To harden your heart to God.
●To put rocks before you that impede your faith – matters that
cause confusion, doubt, unbelief.
●To choke you with the cares and troubles and desires of life – the
good and the bad.

Mark 731 Again, departing from the region of Tyre and Sidon, He came through the
midst of the region of Decapolis to the Sea of Galilee. 32 Then they brought to Him
one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, and they begged Him to put
His hand on him. 33 And He took him aside from the multitude, and put His fingers in
his ears, and He spat and touched his tongue. 34 Then, looking up to heaven, He
sighed, and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” 35 Immediately his ears
were opened, and the [l]impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly. 36
Then He commanded them that they should tell no one; but the more He commanded
them, the more widely they proclaimed it. 37 And they were astonished beyond
measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He makes both the deaf to hear and the
mute to speak.”
