Faith in Christ rests on credible witnesses.
It all depends on whether you think ordinary people can be credible
witnesses. Without knowing anything much the first century people
involved, we often write them off as credulous country bumpkins. Peter,
the owner of a fishing trawler, is impetuous rather than credulous.
Matthew is well educated and cynical. Paul is well educated and willing
to go to any depths to crush what he considers a dangerous religious sect.
All these men report what changed their minds and hearts convincing
them that Jesus of Nazareth was the Son of God, our Redeemer – far
more than a religious teacher from the mists of history.
Consider the story: Jesus in the boat, asleep. The storm, the boat filling,
the danger, the fright, the hopelessness – then they wake Jesus – the
sudden calm. Who is this? Who have we come to?
The writer of the book of Hebrews puts is: Hebrews 12:22 But you have
come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You
have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23 to
the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have
come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made
perfect, 24 to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled
blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
You have come to God, your Judge! You have come to Jesus, the
mediator of a new covenant given by God to mankind!

●Have you ever thought that Jesus was sleeping on the job? You are
not alone. The disciples thought so too. You and I are not so
different from them after all.
●That other question: Does He care? We are right to be concerned.
It would be terrible if He did not. What is the basis of my
assurance? Jesus’ presence and promises!

●The disciples would have known this Psalm. The question: “Who
is this?”, means: Is Jesus God?
●This is the question that haunts us! Here we find something that
happened in history, not a lesson or some thought up religious
belief. These men went through a storm. They saw Jesus
command the storm and it became calm. They knew that the
stormy winds do God’s bidding. Who is Jesus? They shy away
from the logical and obvious conclusion – this is not the reaction
of credulous people, but of people wrestling with what they are
seeing and hearing.
