Tamworth Community Presbyterian Church Experiencing Christ In Community

One of the really exciting things that has been happening since the COVID-19 lockdown was brought into being is that life as we know it has changed rather dramatically. People are staying home because they must and then they are stuck with the challenge of finding things to do while locked down. Many homes and gardens have never looked so good all because of the virus.
But there is another side to the lockdown in that we are spending more time watching the old television. Then what we do find is that our recollections are correct in that there is nothing worthwhile watching on the box. The movies get repeated and there is no live sport if you are into that type of entertainment.
There is so much not holding your attention that even the ads are often better than the programs they are on with. Now let me also explain that I do not go looking some theological theme in every ad although I suspect that if any of us did we would always get the frequent answer that there is another example of sin feeding sin in our world.

In fact, there are ads that really get your Christian theology stirred up as they remind us of the powerful message of the gospel.
There is the ad that gets us turned in and it is the one about the father is taken to school by his daughter with her encouraging words, “You’ll do good dad.” He has to stand before her class with other parents and keep the kids excited as he tries to explain what he does. He is there for show and tell and the question he is asked “What do you do again?” His answer is the simple worldly one of “I drive a hilux.”
But what has this got to do with the gospel message for us today? Well in fact the question asked of this father is the one that should resonate around the world as we look to Jesus our blessed Saviour and Lord. The question that in fact Jesus answers so clearly that we read in the bible is in response to these words. “What do you do?” His answer is of paramount importance for every generation. The reality for us who believe is this is the question that all of us need to be able to answer so that we can explain the truth about Jesus and why he came into the world.
Reflect upon the words of Jesus in John 10:10; where Jesus says; “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” How wonderful are these words of Jesus for every generation? This verse is a great place to start if you are going to explain the gospel and their need for Jesus to anyone still lost in sin. As Jesus says, “I have come that you may have life…”
Jesus is not simply a good example for people to follow treating everyone so nicely and good. Sure, he lived a sinless life, but the world only wants Jesus to be such a nice example for people to follow. The world does not want Jesus as the saviour because that means they have to give up so much as they are confronted with the truth. However, that is what Jesus does. He comes to give life to the sinner who repents and believes in Jesus as their Saviour and Lord.
Look at our reading from John 8:31-47; for the very same message from Jesus about his purpose in coming into the world. Here there was a great argument going on about how could Jesus deliver on his promise to those who believe in him. Jesus answers the question of “what do you do again?’ very clearly with these wonderful words of hope. John 8:32; tells us “The you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” Jesus is the truth.
Jesus is the ‘way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’ John 14:6; Jesus has come so that believers will have life and have it to the full. He has come to give his life as a ransom for the sins of many. There was his promise in John 10:10; of the gift of life not in this world but it is eternal life that he is talking so clearly about.
As you look at other ads as I said earlier the real and present danger is to lead people into sin is very blatant. Any of those ads that promote gambling is feeding on our greed and so tempt people into the sin of covetousness. They always put in the disclaimer to gamble responsibly and wow how refreshing is that. It is almost like they are following the mantra of the world that it is all right to sin just so long as you only do it a little bit. But we know that all sin is rebellion against our Lord.
However, if you look at what Jesus does for sinners there is no need to fear because his work does not need any disclaimer. We are not gambling wondering if his promises and his work are effective for all time. Jesus is the truth that sets us free. He says it will happen and you what? It really does as his promise of life eternal is sealed in his bloodshed upon the cross. What he says he will do.
“What do you do again?” Is the question that Jesus clearly answers through all that he accomplished for the forgiveness of sin. He died so that we will live for eternity with him in glory. How awesome is this and all that anyone needs to do to see the powerful truth of his promise is to repent and believe in Him.
Are you ready to answer the question when people ask you about Jesus? It is our responsibility to know what we believe and who we believe in so that we can share our hope, rejoicing in the promise of eternal life.
You can point people to the bible, but it is awesome if you can share your unshakeable hope in Jesus the giver of eternal life.
“What do you do again?” His answer is that he has come to give life to all who believe in Him. You believe his promise is true and so tell out this wonderful truth to anyone who asks you.
Let us pray…………..Amen.
