Tamworth Community Presbyterian Church Experiencing Christ In Community

Part 3: It’s what drives you.

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God,
so that you may know that you have eternal life. 1 John 5:13.

So how do I know if I have eternal life?
Week 1 we saw test number 1 is “what do you believe?”
Test number 2 is shown in what we do.

Here’s test number three and we find it in 1 John 4:13. We know that we live in Him and he in us because he has given us of his Spirit.

How do I know I’m a Christian? Because I’ve got the Holy Spirit. There is one little problem. How do I know if I’ve got the Holy Spirit. And here I got totally let down.
The logic went like this. You are a Christian if you have the Holy Spirit. Yes but how do I know if I have the Holy Spirit? Well you must have because you’re a Christian. Aughh! Can someone please give me a test that works.

Yes. In fact, I’ll give you three. If the Holy Spirit is in you, you can expect to see three things happening.

1. You will know things that nobody has taught you.

It’s in 2:27 As for you the anointing you receive from him remains in you and you do not need anyone to teach you but his anointing teaches you about all things.

Have you ever had a flash of insight. A new understanding of God or of people. You say “Wow! Where did that come from?” You write in your journal and you discover it six months later and you say “who wrote this incredible stuff?” The Bible says the Holy Spirit in you & will teach you. Yes you still need to listen to teachers and read your Bible but the Holy Spirit will give you other truths. In John 14:26 Jesus said to his disciples “The counselor the Holy Spirit will teach you all things.

So expect the Holy Spirit to speak into your mind. Yes there will be a lot of other voices out there. But the Holy Spirit is wisdom and truth and goodness you will recognize what he says.

2 If the Holy Spirit is in you, you will find that you develop a yearning for God. Why is it that we so love to sing songs like “As the deer” and “I love you Lord”? Because they resonate in our hearts with a yearning for God and a longing to be closer to him. Let’s go to Romans 8:15. You received the spirit of sonship and we cry Abba Father. What is that all about? Do you ever cry Abba Father? I am told that a middle east father will turn cartwheels if the first word his child utters is Abba. Because it is the generic word for daddy. What Paul is saying is that the Holy Spirit gives you a yearning to cling to God. And we have that pining, that love for God. How did it get there? It’s not natural. It’s God’s Spirit linking with our spirit to cry out our love to God.

There was a little boy flying his kite in a fog. An old man came past and said “What are you doing?” He said, “I’m flying a kite.” The old man said, “I can’t see any kite. How do you know it’s there?” The boy answered, “I know it’s there because I can feel the tug.” How do I know the Holy Spirit is in me? Through my life right from the start I know someone has been tugging at my heart, making me long for Jesus. We can’t see the Holy Spirit but there’s a yearning in our heart to love him and long for him. Guess what it’s the tug of the holy spirit. You know He’s there because you can feel the tug.

3. Romans 8:9 You however are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the spirit if the spirit of God lives in you. What drives you? Every day, you make 1000 decisions. What governs your choices?
Are we governed by rules? Sometimes.
Are we steered by our appetites? Up to a point.
Are we influenced by peer pressure? More than I’d like to admit.

But if you’re really a Christian your life is directed by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the star that guides you, that draws you, that informs your decisions. 2 Corinthians 5:11 says We make it our goal to please him. What drives you? What is your life ethos?

Let me give you an example. If you are the parent of a teenager, a major headache for you is how do I monitor their internet use? How do I keep them from all the ugly stuff that's waiting to gobble them up? You can put a bar on their account so it can't access certain sites. You can set rules and inspect their phones once a week and confiscate them if they have any bad stuff there. These these are big stick methods you might even call them old Testament methods. It dawned on me recently that we didn’t have any of that trouble with our two girls because we knew that they were controlled by the spirit and their number one goal was to please him.

That’s the difference the Holy Spirit makes. Listen to him don’t quench him, but love him and follow him. Dear people, I have said these things to you that you may know that you have eternal life. How do you know if you’re a real Christian?
1 it’s what you believe. Do you believe that Jesus is the son of God ruling in heaven and coming back for you?
2 it’s what you do. Have you died to sin, utterly crucified it and taken on the new creation made in the image of Jesus.
3 it’s what drives you. Are you inhabited by the Holy Spirit, taught by the holy spirit, captivated by the Holy Spirit. . . more and more?
